How to Use a Bidet: Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Locate the Bidet
In most bathrooms, the bidet is either a separate fixture or built into the toilet. Some modern toilets have integrated bidet systems, while others may have a handheld sprayer or a traditional standalone basin. See also the different types of bidets.

  1. Use the Toilet First
Before using the bidet, use the toilet as you normally would. The bidet is designed for cleaning after you’ve finished.
  2. Adjust Your Position
If using a standalone bidet, you may need to straddle or sit facing the controls (depending on the bidet’s design). If it’s a toilet-integrated or seat-mounted bidet, simply remain seated on the toilet.
  3. Adjust the Water Temperature and Pressure
Turn on the bidet by adjusting the knobs or controls. Start with a low water pressure setting to avoid splashing. If your bidet has temperature controls, adjust the water to a comfortable warmth.
  4. Clean Yourself
Position the water stream to cleanse the desired area. Most bidets are designed to clean the front (genital) and rear (anal) areas. Adjust your position slightly for better coverage if needed.
  5. Dry Off
Once you’re clean, dry off using toilet paper or a dedicated towel. Some modern bidets have a built-in air dryer, which you can use to avoid paper waste.
  6. Turn Off the Bidet
Once finished, turn off the water and ensure the bidet is off before standing up.
  7. Sanitize the Bidet (if necessary)
If you used a manual sprayer or basin, it’s courteous to clean it with a wipe or spray disinfectant, leaving it ready for the next user.
